SOME FACTS

U.S. researchers have learned:
By age 12, 12% of U.S students are having vaginal sex
7.9% are participating in oral sex
6.5% are having anal sex

Christine Markham of the University of Texas School of Public Health and her colleagues examined sexual at risk behavior among middle school students in a southeastern U.S urban public school district.  This research was done to develop more effective prevention programs.

The findings of this study were that, youth who started having sex before age 14 are much more likely to have multiple sex partners, use alcohol or drugs before sex and have unprotected sex, all which put them at risk of getting an STD and getting pregnant.

  1. I wonder what kinds of factors seem to be present in the youth who are having sex before ate 12 or 14. What do you think about these statistics? Do you think that we should see youth having sex as inevitable and help them be safe? Do you think we should try to encourage abstinence? Your blog and Victoria's are really quite similar - you might be interested in sharing some ideas.

  2. i think we should encourage abstinence but also understand that may not always work and we should teach them all they need to know to be safe.

  3. I think birth control should be free, as well as condoms, they should give them out not at the school, because that would be like the school was saying that it is ok. But maybe have informational meetings at the school and if they go they get it? I dunno I'm sure there are a lot of things wrong with that but I think it would be the most effective. Abstinence should still be considered the only way to go, but we can't keep pretending that they aren't still going to do it.
